Abingdon RFC

At last, Senior Rugby returns to Abingdon. Training restarts on Tuesday 30th March, and fixtures under amended rules are planned on Saturdays throughout May. All taking place within current guidelines aimed at preventing the spread of Covid.

Our Club's Senior management committee, led by Head Coach Gerard Coyne, and skipper Lee Taylor, met virtually on Wednesday 10th March, to plan Abingdon's return to Rugby. Governement rules on Covid prevention suggest organised outdoor sport may restart on 29th March. The RFU suggest the return of training and Touch Rugby on that date, with Rugby under amended rules from 26th April.

The players are desperately keen to play again. Senior training, with contact, will restart on Tuesday 30th March, and take place Tuesdays and Thursdays at7pm. 

The whole Senior squad, will be involved in a  "Ready for Rugby" game  on Saturday 17th April, at 3pm, and  a further squad game, this time under "amended" laws will take place on Saturday 8th May.

"Amended" law games against other local Clubs will take place on Saturdays throughout May. Games against Didcot, at home on 15th May, and away 4th June are already organised. How fitting that Abingdon's first game back, should be a derby against their greatest rivals.

Of course, the Goverment's rules on easing lockdown will still be in place until at least 21st June. Acoordingly, all activity at Abingdon Rugby Club will take place respecting the regulations in place at the time. This will include appropriate social distancing, sanitization, and track and trace guidelines.

It's been a long time coming, but it looks like Rugby is back. The timetable still depends on current successes in the fight against Covid continuing. Lets look forward to a "normal" Rugby season starting in September.
